ADVOCATES OF HEALTH CARE AS A CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TOUT POLL RESULTS

Nearly 83 percent of 400 Massachusetts residents polled earlier this month agreed with the statement that every Massachusetts resident should be able to get the same high quality coverage for medically necessary health and mental health care regardless of their ability to pay, proponents of a constitutional amendment announced in a letter delivered to lawmakers Wednesday. In addition, those polled supported the idea behind the proposed amendment, which calls on lawmakers to draft a universal health care plan for the voters' consideration, by a 4 to 1 margin, according to the Health Care For Massachusetts Campaign. The survey was conducted by KRC/Communications Research for the campaign between May 4 and May 6 as part of the State House News Poll, and has margin of error of plus or minus 4.8 percent. Amendment sponsors say their proposal is the first on the Constitutional Convention calendar when the convention resumes on Aug. 24. A favorable vote would send the question to the 2006 ballot.
